VISUAL CONVERSATIONS

VISUAL CONVERSATIONs

This Web site represents a selection of my work from over 50 years…I have been taking photographs since I was 11 years old!  My Dad gave me a book of Edward Weston photographs and I was immediately drawn to photography.  Soon after, I became interested in using a camera to create a visual story about people and their daily lives.

The New Bayside photos and interviews were produced for my MFA thesis. In 2017 I published a book of my photographs.  Irene Borger wrote an insightful foreword to accompany the book.  The book includes portraits, places, and landscapes; what I consider my “best” work!   If you would like to purchase a copy of my book, please contact me directly through this Web site.    Here is the cover of the book.

While I photograph different subjects, I prefer photographing people…to reveal the human qualities that connect us.  As you can see, it is evident that the person is often looking directly at me. I believe that the visual conversation can only happen if the person agrees for me to photograph them.  This establishes our connection and it enables the person to participate in defining how to be portrayed.

In this way, as a willing subject, we respond to each other’s presence.  I prefer that approach to secretly “taking a picture.”  Ultimately, I prefer spending time with people, to get to know more about them, so that my portrayal reflects more than just a moment in time.

These photographs are culled from many countries and my travels around the world throughout several decades.
